Although the TSL industry is currently facing many challenges, forecasts suggest an upturn, especially in international transport and warehousing. Aspects of the development of specific industries are worth considering in the context of the choice of a course of study that this year's high school graduates are about to face. What opportunities do graduates have to choose logistics majors?
Global trade in goods is expected to rebound in the coming period, lifting growth rates to 2.6 percent.[1] In Poland, economic growth and forecasts for the sector favor positive sentiment in the transportation and warehousing industries. For international carriers, growth is forecast at 3.4 percent, and for domestic services at around 0.5 percent.[2] This means very promising growth prospects for the entire TSL sector, and is a signal for this year's high school graduates to consider a career path in this industry.
- "At Geis, we have a long-standing commitment to the development and education of young people and encourage them to tie their future to the logistics industry. In the perception of high school graduates, there may be many stereotypes that are close to reality and, as a result, may disqualify logistics majors from their consideration. The truth is, however, that in logistics you can develop on many levels and use a wide variety of skills and aptitudes: from analysis and planning, to building customer relationships, optimizing supply chains and managing teams. It is also, contrary to stereotypes, a very creative industry. It often requires an out-of-the-box approach and an open mind. Also, please don't be misled by first impressions. Both men and women are fulfilled in it" says Dorota Wójcik, HR Manager of Geis PL.
A degree in logistics is currently available at 41 public universities and 35 non-public colleges.[3] They offer many career opportunities in various sectors of the economy, such as manufacturing, trade, e-commerce or distribution. Logistics graduates will find work as, for example: supply chain specialists, warehouse managers, logistics analysts or production planners. They can find employment in a variety of sectors, such as industry, commerce, transportation, warehousing, as well as in the public sector. Jobs in logistics offer clear paths for advancement - from specialists and coordinators, to logistics managers, to logistics directors. As you gain experience, opportunities for promotion and salary increases increase significantly."Studying logistics can open the door to interesting and dynamic career paths, especially in international organizations that offer a wide range of development opportunities. Logistics is a field that plays a key role in the functioning of the modern economy" adds Dorota Wójcik.
According to the “ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey” report for Q1 2024, positive hiring intentions are declared in the first quarter of this year by, among others, entrepreneurs in the transportation, logistics and automotive fields. This means that the most job offers are coming in this sector, and the number of job offers increased by 21 percent. - that's 16 p.p. than a year earlier. As globalization and technology change the way business is conducted, the demand for skilled professionals is growing. A degree in logistics offers a wide range of skills and knowledge that opens the door to many interesting and well-paid career paths.
Geis has been supporting young logisticians in entering the job market for many years. As a socially responsible company, it is committed to secondary and higher education in the training of human resources. This is one of the elements of its ESG strategy. It imparts knowledge about logistics through lectures, exercises, workshops, scientific conferences at universities, as well as during study visits to the company.
- "We have set an ambitious goal to be a forge of logistics personnel, so for years we have been inviting students and pupils to our company for internships and apprenticeships. Every year we run the Forwarder's Academy program - an internship program aimed at graduates and final-year students of logistics faculties. The program enables young people taking their first steps in the labor market to gain professional experience in the TSL industry and, it is worth noting, very often results in permanent cooperation", adds Dorota Wójcik.
Geis is a business partner of many universities and a member of the Business Councils or Employers' Councils operating at these universities, and also supports high schools by exercising honorary patronage over classes educating young logisticians. The company wants to reach out to young people and make them aware that a career in the world of logistics is a chance for a very good, stable and challenging job.
- "At G-Team we have many wonderful women who break stereotypes and are an inspiration to younger colleagues by setting an example that a career in logistics is not just for men. Nowadays, one of the basic actions of an employer should be to support the employee, also privately. A package of benefits, sports, wellbeing programs and, above all, respect for private time, or work-life balance, are the basics. I think it's very important to show young people who are just starting their career path how they can steer it in the future, as well as what the work culture is like in an international organization. This can realistically influence the decisions they will ultimately make about planning their future and their development”, concludes Dorota Wójcik.
The growing importance of effective supply chain management means that the demand for specialists in this field will increase. Logistics graduates can count on stable employment, wide promotion opportunities and a dynamic work environment. By choosing logistics, they are investing in skills that are not only valued in the labor market, but also crucial to the development of a modern economy.
